5 Ultra-low Temperature Freezer Tips in Line with Sustainability

Wolflabs is committed to halve carbon emissions by 2030, and as many other companies look at ways they can be more sustainable, we have five tips on how to run your ultra-low temperature freezer more sustainably.

1. Check for wear and tear on door seals at least once a year. If the door is not sealing properly across the whole surface, your energy costs will be needlessly high.

2. Defrosting your freezers on an annual basis will allow for the removal of built-up ice, and gives you the opportunity to give the interior compartment a clean. The more ice your freezer has in it, the more energy it uses.

3. It is more energy-efficient to have a full freezer than an empty one. The freezer works most efficiently when packed as full as possible. Need to fill in some space? Tuck extra ice packs or spare containers inside.

4. At https://www.wolflabs.co.uk/laboratory-products/freezers-ultra-low-temperature note the difference in energy efficiencies featured. You will see that there is a four-fold difference between the best and the worst.

5. Once the freezer is down to temperature most energy is consumed through temperature recovery after prolonged door openings. For this reason, being able to retrieve samples quickly is a major benefit. It therefore may be worth purchasing an inventory system. Depending on the usage it is likely the cost of the inventory system will be compensated for by the reduction in energy consumption, over the lifetime of the freezer.
