Understanding Arc Melters
An arc melter (or arc melting furnace) is a high-temperature metallurgical device that uses an electric arc between a tungsten electrode and a water-cooled copper hearth to rapidly melt and alloy metals and alloys—often in an inert gas or vacuum environment—to over 3,000 °C for producing high-purity, homogeneous ingots. These systems support processes such as alloy development, casting (tilt or suction), and rapid cooling to form bespoke materials including titanium, zirconium, refractory metals, metallic glasses and high-entropy alloys, while preventing oxidation and enabling accurate composition control.
